HALT AND CATCH FIRE - SEASON: 1 EPISODE: 4 - CLOSE TO THE METAL

HALT and CATCH FIRE : EPISODE 4

"CLOSE TO THE METAL"

Programming on Bare Metal is the term Engineers use to describe the lowest level code (often written In the lowest language - Assembly Language generally used to create an interface layer that the Operating System and application programs can use to access the hardware resources of the machine.

The project moves forward with its COMDEX and performance Goals. John Bosworths leadership is Questioned by Nathan Cardiff while the team realizes the loss of all the BIOS code. Donna is called upon to leave work while working on a deadline to help the team recover the code. Donna emerges as the one adult at Cardiff that day and takes each of the other characters to school on their lack of maturity and discipline

This episode opens with Joe and John arguing over development cost rate of burn. "The future is expensive," Joe tells Bosworth. Joe tries to show John their progress, achieved using unconventional technology so they are ready for COMDEX in November, but Bosworth isn't impressed. So Joe tells Bosworth it must be tough to keep up when "you don't understand the technology". Before Bosworth can react, he's told Nathan Cardiff is waiting for him on the phone.

"396 milliseconds!" one of the engineers exclaims. The prototype is already faster than the (very real) Doherty Threshold[3] of 400 milliseconds - the latest standard measure of computer responsiveness.[4] When Joe tells Cameron, he is surprised she doesn't react, so she gives him a self-knowing look and says "I knew it would be fast" and promises that the BIOS will be complete in two days.

HALT AND CATCH FIRE - SEASON: 1 EPISODE: 3 - HIGH PLAINS HARDWARE

HALT and CATCH FIRE : EPISODE 3

"High Plains Hardware"

High Plains Hardware is the third episode of Halt and Catch Fire on AMC. It first aired on June 15, 2014. The episode begins with Gordon gently letting an employee go. Another employee barges in and demands that Gordon sign the reference letter that he wrote himself. Cameron wakes up from still sleeping at Cardiff Electric. She types computer code but keeps getting stuck. Joe meets with an investor from out of town. Joe tries to get John Bosworth to play along and make a deal that will result in financing that Cardiff Electric badly needs. Joe is hesitant to let the investor bring his people in because they will move away from the old-school business practices even more.

Gordon meets with a group of engineers who still work for Cardiff Electric. They discuss the various challenges they are facing. Every idea that appears to be a step forward causes steps back (hypothetically) because they realize counter-problems that will be caused by each idea if they try it all the way through. One engineer is quick to tell Gordon each thing that will go wrong if they do this or what will go wrong if they do that. He also convinces Gordon they have to tell Joe they can't engineer the machine.

Joe and John have dinner with Nathan Cardiff, founder of Cardiff Electric. Nathan tells Joe that he likes him trying to do things to succeed but that John is in charge, especially when it comes to money. Joe agrees to this and to go to a dinner with a local, wealthy woman who will provide the capital they need. The dinner does not go well because Joe perceives the woman as being hung up on herself and what her money can buy her. The deal falls through because of how Joe fails to play along.
Gordon's wife sees him working on the machine design at home. She has an idea that will help them have the space they need to make the machine work. The pessimistic engineer tells Gordon once again why it won't work because there is no one who can mass produce it for them due to the machine design being completely different from everything else that's out there. Gordon is in a car riding with this engineer when they are in a fender bender. It scratches Gordon up some. He realizes he's had all he can take from the pessimistic engineer, fires him, gets out of the car, and walks away.

HALT AND CATCH FIRE : EPISODE 2

"FUD"

CREDITS TO :  ROLLINGSTONE,COM

First things first: "FUD," the title of the second episode of Halt and Catch Fire, stands for "Fear, uncertainty, and doubt." (Apologies if the "FU" had you expecting something raunchy.) It's the acronym infamously wielded by another acronym, IBM, to crush its would-be competitors by spooking their opponents' potential clients back in the Seventies and Eighties. And that unholy trinity is exactly what the company uses against Cardiff Electronics, when it drops its legal challenge to IBM refugee Joe MacMillan's upstart personal-computer "division" in favor of hitting Cardiff right where it mortally wounds — in the pocketbook.
